The Clinical and Translational Research Informatics Program is designed to serve as a dedicated core research facility providing scientific services related to clinical database design and management. There are two primary divisions in the CTRIP: the Data Management Division and the Technical Support Division. These two divisions provide a core infrastructure to ensure that industry standards for computerized systems used in clinical trials, best practices, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) common to all projects are followed.

The CTRIP is currently responsible for all data management activities for three institutes and two departments and multiple research projects. Currently five terabytes of clinical data are housed in the Program. The CTRIP recently completed a successful external audit that reviewed all operational aspects and will undergo annual audits to ensure ongoing compliance with recommended industry standards and with 21 CFR part 11 requirements.

The CTRIP has the following capabilities:

• Secure high availability web based research data collection capabilities,
• Data collection, storage, and analytic capabilities using Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise database system (an advanced high performance relational database management system),
• 24 hour remote access availability for researchers to a high speed backend data center supported by Microsoft Terminal Server Services to conduct analyses over the same high speed network that is used to collect and store data, and
• Industry standard analytic tools (SAS, STATA, SPSS, and others).

The following services are available through the CTRIP:

• Review of scientific protocols to develop the data management processes most appropriate for the study,
• Form design for web-based and other data capture,
• Database design,
• Database programming,
• Quality management and testing of data consistent with the scientific protocol,
• Medical coding,
• Data entry and cleaning,
• SQL queries, and
• Web application hosting services.

There are two base CTRIP usage options (see fee tables below). The base fees and services are described in Table 1. Some projects may require more than the base usage services. For these projects, incremental charges will be added using the pricing structure outlined in Table 2.

Programmers are available at either an hourly rate or at a percent of their FTE to design the database and manage the data. A staff member works with each Principal Investigator to determine the programming needs so that they can be budgeted appropriately.
